In November the exposition of the Ekaterinburg zoo enriched itself with new animals. Binturongs, musangs, Senegalese galagos, weeper capuchins, mandrills, red-billed toucans, golden eagles, toucan, and also a magnificent black jaguar arrived in the Ural capital. Animals arrived in October, however according to the veterinary requirements they were placed in quarantine for a month and therefore only now they appeared before public.
Mandrills and binturongs are predators from tropical civet family. In spite of the fact that by the quantity of kinds it is the largest family of predatory class because of their absence in the territory of Russia, they are unknown to many animal-fanciers. In the Ekaterinburg zoo civet family has been presented by spotty genets, laughing spotted hyenas (they are not presented in any Russian zoo and in the zoos of the former Soviet republics), and also by two kinds of mongooses. Now the group of zoological rarities was replenished with unique predator of the Old World with a tenacious tail - binturong, or lyuvak as it is called by the Indonesians.
Binturongs arrived in the zoo from the Philippines via Czech Republic, it is a young pair: the male is Sante, and female is Syuzi. The staff noticed affable character of the male and named it Santik. The she-binturong was more reserved: it practically does not leave its small house.
Musangs arrived in Ekaterinburg from Moscow; they are also young animals which were born in the beginning of this year. They have no names yet, the workers looking after them, get accustomed to the character of animals to reflect it in their names.
The black jaguar Argon lives in the neighborhood with the jaguar Sara on the second floor of pavilion of heat-loving predators. It is still too young for acquaintance with female, now both cats sniff each other through the chink between their open-air cages.
Senegalese galagos were born in the Moscow zoo in 2005. This pair of diminutive primacies will supplement with themselves the exposition of diminutive relatives of human along with their larger confrere - thick-tailed bushbabies, which have been living in the zoo since 2004.
Weeper capuchins were also born in Moscow. They arrived as a family: pair of adults and male-teenager. This affable kind of capuchins was called weepers because of their original sounds, which really remind of children's crying. Now they live near their confreres - the family of white-throated sapajous in the pavilion for monkeys.
The pair of mandrills arrived from the zoo of Dresden. The male is called Liin, it is about three years, the female is Kumani which is about four years. The mandrills are considered to be the brightest African monkeys, not only thanks to their painted face and opposite part of the body, but also for their rough character. The inhabitants are said to be afraid of herd of mandrills more than leopards. However new animals of the zoo are young, responsive on tender treatment and as the staff hopes, they will be quite easy to get on with each other, and with the zoo personnel.
The collection of birds was also replenished. The pair of golden eagles arrived from the Novosibirsk zoo where they were born in the beginning of May of 2009. They will live at «eagle hill» together with other kinds of large birds of prey. And red-billed toucans, as tropical inhabitants of the zoo are supposed to have been placed in the pavilion of birds and exotic predators where visitors can compare them with black-billed toucans and toucan Toko.
One more novelty of the Ekaterinburg zoo is Mexican beaded lizard Khariton. It was born in the USAand arrived in the Ural capital from the Tula exsotarium, it is about 4 years. As there are no poisonous snakes in the zoo Khariton became here the only representative of poisonous reptiles. It is possible to look at it in the pavilion «Exsotarium» on the ground floor.
