On the first day of the Summit of Heads of States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, June 15, 2009, General Consulate of Tajikistan Republic was opened in Ekaterinburg.
The opening ceremony of diplomatic mission was attended by the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon, the Governor of Sverdlovsk Region Eduard Rossel, the Head of Ekaterinburg Arkady Chernetsky and other officials.
Representative of Tajikistan became the twentieth consular office, operating in the capital of the Urals. This Central Asian republic is a member of the SCO, and cooperates with the Sverdlovsk region in terms of economic development, cultural and social sphere.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the consulate in Ekaterinburg, Emomali Rakhmon expressed his confidence that «this step will contribute to the intensification of Russian-Tajik contacts and, above all, relations between the general public of both countries, the consolidation of unified economic, cultural and informational space». Tajik leader stressed that the choice of Ekaterinburg as the locations of consulates in the Urals is not accidental. The capital of the Urals and the Sverdlovsk region in general has close links and examples of successful cooperation with the Republic in various fields. The annual volume of trade turnover between Tajikistan and the Sverdlovsk region reaches about 30 million U.S. dollars and tends to a constant growth. For thousands of the Republic dwellers the Urals with its capital Ekaterinburg became an attractive place to work. This fact, according to Emomali Rakhmon, is accounted for the establishment of the necessary conditions for Tajik specialists in Ekaterinburg and the region by the leadership of the city and region. Leading universities of the Ural capital provide skilled personnel for Tajikistan.
After the procedure of cutting red band and raising the national flag of Tajikistan, the participants and guests of the ceremony visited the Consulate lodging, located in the house number 2 of Grazhdanskaya Street. The room for the diplomatic mission was provided by the Administration of Ekaterinburg. It also provided improvements of adjacent to the consulate area and access roads. In the coming days the diplomatic mission staff members will start working at the new location. Activities of the Consulate will be tied up not only with migration, but it will also serve to strengthen the mutually beneficial business relationships, and to integrate Russian and Tajik enterprises, academic and cultural societies.
