Experiments on the Use of an Electronic Ticket will be Held in Ekaterinburg Subway

23 июня 2009 22:21

Administration of Ekaterinburg is finalizing to prepare for an experiment on the use of an electronic ticket on the basis of EMUE «Ekaterinburg Subway».

According to the task by the Head of Ekaterinburg Arkady Chernetsky, by the end of 2009 there must be fully developed the concept and the scheme of using electronic tickets for all kinds of public transport in the city. Currently, the city authorities had examined the experience of other Russian mega-cities that have implemented in their electronic travel (e-travel), and familiarized themselves with the proposals of the leading enterprises specializing in the development and implementation of hardware and software to service the electronic travel cards.

Finally, as a pilot site for the running of e-tickets in the Ural capital, EMUE «Ekaterinburg Subway» was chosen. Technical, software and information support for the project is mandated to carry out by the Ekaterinburg group of companies «ASK». Currently, equipment for reading information from plastic cards has already been installed and established at all seven stations of «the subway». The same way the turnstiles in all 10 metro vestibules are appropriately equipped. In addition, there are special terminals for verification and balance replenishment of electronic cards of the passengers, as well as controllers and servers of the system, whose task is to collect, process and transfer all data related to the electronic system of travel. By the 5th of July, all this complicated electronic equipment will be tested and prepared for the start of work. Since July 15, the electronic system of travel on the subway will be operating in test mode, and 200 volunteers selected by the organizers of the experiment by random sampling will be able to take its advantages. Among the volunteers are retired people, students, metro builders, veterans of the underground, as well as the citizens who have the right to privileged tickets according to the applicable law. All of them have already received the experimental plastic cards, which they will use when traveling in the subway for two and a half months - until September 30.

After analyzing the results of the experiment, the massive use of electronic cards will begin in Ekaterinburg underground. The city authorities have already ordered 50 thousand plastic cards, which will be offered to passengers as «an electronic purse». If the experience of electronic tickets in the «underground» will be considered positive, from the 1st of January, 2010 it will be extended to other urban public transport.
