Maslenitsa: Russians start celebrating the Pancake Week

24 февраля 2014 14:28

Maslenitsa (Shrovetide or Mardi Gras), is a Slavic folk holiday that takes place the week before the start of Orthodox Lent. The holiday marks the end of winter and advent of spring, and involves a whole lot of feasting before the Lenten fast — with blini (pancakes), of course.

Topped with sour cream, caviar, berries or jam, blini are served on tables everywhere. Blini with their round shape and warmth symbolize the sun.

Sunday — the final day of Maslenitsa — is the day for forgiving. On this day, people ask forgiveness from their nearest and dearest for any sleights or grievances that might have happened over the year.

Then, follow the tradition, there are singing and dancing. There is a village bonfire, on which the scarecrow "Lady Maslenitsa" to be burned in a ritual to say "Goodbye" to winter.
