Russia celebrates Easter

20 апреля 2014 13:54

Russia celebrates Orthodox Easter on April 20th. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter according to the Orthodox calendar.

Russians follow the traditions and decorate eggs, bake kulichi (Russian bread with sweet tops). The meal is blessed by the church before the lunch.

Eggs may be cracked with nails as a reminder of Christ. An egg may be cut into pieces - one piece for each family member at the Easter table.

At that day many Russians who even are not frequent church visitors, attend church. People greet each other with a phrase "Christ is risen!". The congregation replies with: "He is risen indeed!"
